Proven Treatments for Hair Loss
Hair loss is a health condition mostly associated with men of old age. However, official national health statistics report that 38% of adult males and 24% of adult females suffer from genetically predetermined loss of hair. These statistics only refer to patients with hereditary baldness, i.e. male and female pattern baldness. Patients suffering from the second most common form of hair loss -alopecia areata and patients with other types of temporary or permanent hair loss are not included in these statistics. Hereditary baldness is typically being induced by dihydrotestosterone (DHT) attacks on susceptible hair follicles whereas other forms of hair loss have different causes. DHT is known to be the main cause of hereditary baldness in both sexes. This natural metabolite of the male hormone testosterone, which is also present in women, causes shrinking of susceptible hair follicles and results in gradual hair miniaturization and decay.
This accidental discovery of DHT’s negative activity was made in the 1990s in patients suffering from benign prostatic enlargement treated with finasteride as they suddenly started growing thicker and longer hair in their thin areas on the scalp and several years later after series of clinical testing the first hair loss pill named Propecia, containing 1mg of finasteride (Proscar, the medication for treating enlarged prostates contains 5mg) became approved by the FDA for treating hair loss in men. To this date Propecia is the only FDA approved hair loss pill. It is proven to help more than 80% of male patients to maintain their hair and in about 55% of them it was shown to thicken the existing hair and regrow some hair lost recently. Resent research studies show that women could also benefit from Propecia (finasteride) but it could have serious negative effects on male fetus if they became pregnant.
Finasteride, though being one of the most powerful hair loss treatments for male pattern baldness, is far from being an ultimate cure for baldness. There are some other existing treatments that also need to be considered if you wish to preserve your hair. One such treatment is minoxidil, the first medicinal substance which ever got approved by the FDA for treating hair loss under the trade name Rogaine for men and later also Rogaine for women. Minoxidil is being applied topically to the scalp where it is supposed to induce renewed hair growth. It is a hair growth stimulant, not interfering with DHT activity. It is a vasodilator and its exact mechanism of action and resulting effects on hair follicles are not known. Minoxidil provides best hair regrowth results when combined with an anti-androgen treatment such as Propecia.
Currently the most popular method of hair restoration is hair surgery. It is the only way of naturally restoring a substantial part of your lost mane within a relatively short period of time. Hair surgery consists in transplanting healthy hair follicles from the back of your scalp to the balding area. These follicles are considered to be resistant to the harmful effects of DHT and they remain resistant to them also after transplanting them to the new area. Hair surgery is a kind of art when hair restoration surgeon creates an illusion of full head of hair with relatively small amount of hair follicles moved to the balding area. This art is based on the fact that in order to notice by the naked eye that a person is losing hair he/she must have lost at least 50% of the hair in that particular area. So even though only a relatively small amount of hair follicles is being transplanted to the bald area they can create an impression of the full head of hair.
Hair transplantation also has its weaknesses. The foremost is the shortage of the donor hair which limits its applicability to patients with moderate to medium hair loss. The second is the fact that hair transplantation does nothing to stop the further progression of hair loss. So in order to prevent the need for another hair transplant session the patients must use hair loss treatments such as minoxidil and finasteride for the rest of their life. If hair loss continues it leads to unnatural patterns of baldness and the only way of correcting it is another hair transplant session. However, due to the limited supply of healthy hair follicles it can become impossible to transplant additional hair. Therefore, patients need to buy finasteride 1mg online for many years to come in order to avert such situation from happening. Just imagine what you would look like if your hair loss continued so that you would lose hair in areas adjacent to the transplanted areas and no donor hair was left to fill the newly developed bald area. You would need to shave your head and all the money you spent on hair surgery and the pain you endured would be wasteful. Therefore, it is important to consider your readiness to get on Propecia for the rest of your life before you embark on hair surgery.
